2.0 out of 5 stars Too pricey for what you get, March 1, 2009
This review is from: Hydrofarm CK64050 Germination Station with Heat Mat (Lawn & Patio)
This item is essentially a plastic base and clear top (very flimsy) with a heating pad that the base sits on. It's adequate for starting plants from seed, but my main complaint is that for what you get, it's way too expensive. I believe a fair price for this item would be around $20, NOT $40. If you do decide to purchase a germination station like this one, buy the one with the taller top - it doesn't take long before the new plants start running into the 2" tall lid.

Although it may seem a little over priced, it is the convenience that you pay for. The product is exactly what it shows, a plastic tub with a plastic top, plastic dirt moldings, and a heating pad. If you think about the price of the heating pad that fits perfectly with the container, it is well worth the while.

In addition, I have had success with this product. I grow indoor coffee, and I have received a much quicker germination rate; as well as being healthier. Furthermore, it gives you great control of not only temperature, but humidity. In my opinion, that is a major plus.

I bought this kit because of the price was about $40 and there was no shipping charge. Now I am just using the heat mat and tray to coax fig cuttings to root. Late winter I will reinsert the planting cell tray and the clear lid to germinate other small cuttings and garden vegetables. The station and mat are standard size and weight. The mat provides good even heat and seems tough enough to last a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hydrofarm MTPRTC Electronic Temperature Controller for Heat Mats, October 30, 2007
This review is from: Hydrofarm MTPRTC Digital Thermostat For Heat Mats (Lawn & Patio)
I am using this mat to keep a constant temperature on my Kombucha brew. Using a standard heating pad, this theromstat does the job. I'm very pleased with it. I can keep the temperature at 79 degrees and not have to have a heating pad constantly on. Keep the suction cup clean so it doesn't pop off the glass and a thermometer handy to monitor the temperature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totaly awesome Heat Mat monitor., February 3, 2010

Works like a charm.
Connect the Heat Mat monitor's power cord into the wall, then connect the seedling heat mat into the monitor.
To set the degrees is very easy. Hold down the button "SET" until the numbers are blinking. Then using the up and down arrows, set the desired temperature.
There is a little wire with a plastic white tip that hangs from the monitor.
Push the white part into the soil for temperature reading.(Once temperature is set, do not be alarmed when your heat mat reaches its maximum temperature you set it to then the Heat Mat monitor temperature will go up and down 3 degrees to prevent over heating)

This is very helpful for starting seeds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for use with herp setup, March 18, 2011

This review is from: Hydrofarm MTPRTC Digital Thermostat For Heat Mats (Lawn & Patio)
Just like a few other reviewers on here, I bought these for my under tank heaters on my two python tanks. They are very, very effective at regulating the temperatures accurately. I compare the temps on this product with my digital thermometers and they work great.

A few things some people would like to know:
- These are set it and forget it thermostats. You put in the maximum temp (i.e, 90 or 92) degrees and this thermostat will automatically kick on if the temp gets 2 degrees less (88 or 90 degrees respectively). This means you are not going to get too much variation in the warm spot hide which is a great thing but you CAN NOT change this variance. I don't see a real reason you need to though.
- The probe cables are perfect length and since they are designed for soil applications, they can be buried in substrate. They also have a suction cup if you need to monitor ambient air instead.
- TIP: Though some people say you should bury the probe... Read more

This review is from: Hydrofarm JSV4 4-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System (Lawn & Patio)
Just received and assembled this product today. I'm not sure why others have posted about poor quality and flimsy construction of this product. I am very satisfied with the construction and sturdiness. This product is exactly what I expected for the price, product description, and pictures.

I did notice that there are 3 very similar hydrofarm 4 foot grow systems listed on amazon, with a $15 price-range difference. This is the most expensive of the three. The only difference I can tell from the written description is that this product is described as having a premium light fixture. The pictures look the same. One of the other 4 foot hydrofarm systems received a few positive reviews.

Assembly required a philips head screwdriver, pair of pliers, and about 5 minutes of my time. One screw is used to connect each of the two vertical supports to the base cross-bars. Due to the shape and construction of the parts, this fit is tight and secure. Then each of... Read more

This review is from: Hydrofarm JSV4 4-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System (Lawn & Patio)
This is my initial impression of the grow light system: like many other products on the market, this seems to have fallen prey to "make it as cheap as possible and charge too much for it". Luckily, Amazon's price is better than others'. The unit does what it should but the supporting materials are lightweight and flimsy - in desperate need of an upgrade. It feels like one twist of the support pieces and the frame would collapse. For this price the unit should be of a higher standard of materials and build quality. I've found this problem with many things these days.
The unit is easy enough to assemble. My unit was pinched at one of the mounting joints so I had to reshape a bit with pliers before the pieces would connect.
The height adjustment is a nice feature but the "feather-touch" claim is an exaggeration. Though not difficult to adjust, this description certainly doesn't apply to this mechanism. It's more like raising and lowering a heavy, moody mini-blind... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice bargain for the money!, October 7, 2007
I have some mixed feelings about this product, even though I'm about to order a second one. First, and the only downside to this light, the overall construction is rather cheap. The frame is rather flimsy...Hydrofarm put all their know-how into the most important part: The light itself. But be forewarned the frame is a bit wobbly. Since a grow light sits stationary most of the time, it's not a serious issue. The two biggest plus points for this product.. the price and the fact that it works. I grow exotics and palms in zone 7 and have to overwinter them inside, and my Hydrofarm light has kept them going for 2 years straight. Unless you have the extra bucks $$$ to invest in the HP sodium or metal halide lights (as well as the increased energy usage) it would be hard to beat this bargain.
